“Everything we discussed was leaked to the newspapers,” Chinese President Xi Jinping accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G-20 summit.

Chinese head of state and party leader Xi Jinping complained to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about a lack of confidentiality after bilateral talks. In a video on Wednesday, Xi was seen with Trudeau on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, saying: “Everything we discussed yesterday was leaked to the newspapers. That’s not appropriate.” That’s not how the conversation should be.

Those who are serious engage in dialogue with mutual respect. “Otherwise, it’s hard to say what the outcome will be,” Xi warned. Trudeau responded: “In Canada, we believe in free, open and honest conversation.” Perhaps the dialogue could be continued. He wants to work “constructively” with Xi Jinping. “But there will be things we don’t agree on,” Trudeau said.

The conversation between the two politicians was accidentally recorded by a camera from the Canadian press pool.

Xi Jinping looked indignant and said, “Create the conditions.” He then shook Trudeau’s hand, put on a friendly face, and left.

First meeting after three years

It was the first meeting between Trudeau and Xi in more than three years. However, unlike Xi Jinping’s meetings with other heads of state and government, it was not declared an official meeting. According to press reports, Trudeau complained during the meeting about Chinese interference in Canadian democracy.

Relations between the two countries are strained. China arrested two Canadians and charged them with alleged espionage following the arrest in 2018 of the chief financial officer of the telecommunications group Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, at the request of the US. Diplomats spoke of “hostage diplomacy”. After a long tussle with US judicial authorities, Meng Wanzhou was allowed to return to China in 2021 in a barter, after which the two Canadians were only released.
