Bright Christmas needs so much electricity

If the pretty lights stay dark around Christmas, it will save some electricity. But is it worth it in the end? Are we saving energy reserves? Experts refuse.

Can voltage-free Christmas lights save us from power outages? Energy expert Mark Iten (42) sees only a minimal benefit for the power supply in the exception. He says: “In my eyes, this is symbolic politics. If we compare the annual hours of Christmas lighting with, for example, window lighting, it makes little sense to do without it. In this way, we will not save enough electricity. The vast majority of lights are LED and therefore extremely energy-efficient.»

Are Christmas lights a no-go this year?

Debates in Switzerland: Are Christmas lights a no-go this year?(02:43)

Experts from Zurich Canton Electricity Works (EKZ), one of the most important energy suppliers in Switzerland, sounded the same. The consumption of electricity from public Christmas lighting is so small that the amount of electricity is not even known. Spokesman Christian Schwarz says: “In the canton of Zurich, public Christmas decorations are attached to street lights. Many municipalities have already switched to LEDs, so the consumption of around 70,000 light points for street lighting is barely significant at 0.4 percent of the total consumption. Public Christmas lights are very low in comparison.”
