Super League on cup day – Two FCL juniors bring victory to Basel in the city of lights – Sports

  • FC Basel scored 2:0 in Lucerne in the catch-up match of the 3rd round of the Superliga.
  • The game was decided by an early penalty goal by Darian Males and a goal by Bradley Fink shortly before the end.
  • This puts FCB in third place in the table.
  • In addition to this championship clash, four rounds of the cup’s 16 rounds took place on Wednesday night, here’s an overview.

Due to the national celebration in Lucerne, this game was played just three months later than planned, in the middle of cup week. FC Basel started the match in Lucerne without any delay and immediately recovered. Andi Zeqiri was elbowed in the face by Denis Simani in the penalty area in the 3rd minute of the aerial battle.

After a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty and Darian Males coolly went down against Mario Müller to make it 1-0. However, the FCB player only reluctantly celebrated his second Super League goal against his youth club.

Dräger fails on the beam

The home team needed a moment after this cold start, but then FCL slowly developed into the better team on the pitch. Two first-class chances wasted in 3 minutes:

  • 17th minute: Lucerna’s top scorer Max Meyer gets the ball a few meters from the left post and pulls it away. FCB goalkeeper Marwin Hitz is already beaten, but Arnau Comas can still save.
  • 20th minute: Mohamed Dräger takes the ball directly into the penalty area and pulls it down. But the Tunisian only hits the post.

After these scenes, Basel defended better and prevented further great chances from the “Lichtenstadter”. This image then ran through practically the entire game. Lucerna was more forward, fighting and looking for attacking play. A draw would have been deserved a long time ago – only the solidary men of coach Alex Frei lacked penetration.

In the last quarter of the game, FCB managed to set up a couple of pins again. After one of them, Bradley Fink got to the ball on the edge of the penalty area and immediately sunk it to make it 2:0 and decide (87′). Fink – trained as Males in central Switzerland – also refrained from a big celebration out of respect for his former club.

But the rest of the Basel team was overjoyed. This means that Frei’s team managed to win away for only the second time in this championship and at the same time made a big jump in the table: they improved from 7th to 3rd place, leaving Lucerne behind.

The home side’s frustration was great, after always scoring 4 games in a row and now going long distances. Coach Mario Frick even saw a red card shortly before the end, apparently he got confused with the fourth referee.

Here’s how to proceed

This weekend is the last round of the Superliga before the World Cup. FCB travel to Grasshoppers in Letzigrund on Saturday, Lucerne have to travel to Leader YB in Bern the next day.
