Stopping Ferrari development was not voluntary

(Motorsport-Total.com) – Ferrari started this Formula 1 season as the team to beat but were eventually overtaken by Red Bull. Because while the world champion team has made huge progress with their RB18, not much has come from the reds. Most recently, Mercedes also dropped them.

Ferrari has openly admitted that the lack of F1-75 updates in the second half of the season dampened some of the competition at the top.

While it was initially believed that the decision was to allow the team to better focus their resources on next year, it has now been revealed that it was a financial decision.

Binotto: You have reached the cost limit

Team principal Mattia Binotto said after the Brazilian Grand Prix that Ferrari had no choice but to halt development for this year as the budget cap of around $144 million for this season had been reached.

“It was not a choice. We just ran out of money from the budget limit,” he explained. “We just reached the upper limit. There was no way to develop the car anymore, so we stayed where we were.”

While the lack of progress with F1-75 has helped Mercedes overtake them in terms of pace, Binotto does not think this necessarily represents a trend for the 2023 season. The factory continues to work on ideas for a new challenger.

The development for 2023 remains unaffected

“Of course, this does not affect the development of the car for next year,” emphasizes the team boss. “But we decided to stop the development of the current car because we also have to make the parts to put them on the track. We couldn’t afford the additional costs.”

Ferrari haven’t won since July’s Austrian Grand Prix, and the last few Grands Prix have seen Mercedes steadily improve. Therefore, it was no surprise to Binotto that they had now won the race.

“It’s not surprising because if I look at recent races, they might have won races with different tire choices. I think they just didn’t win because they didn’t choose the right tire.”

“They were the fastest car in the last few races. I think the new aero package introduced in Austin worked well. Now they’re taking advantage of it.”
