Homophobic statements by Qatari ambassador and former soccer player Khalid Salman continue to cause a sensation. In an interview for ZDF, he had Homosexuality as “haram” and thus marked as “forbidden”. A little later he backtracked and said the statements were “taken out of context”.
Despite the relativization on Salman’s part, the indignation continues – resulting in reactions of all kinds. Of particular note is Sky Sport presenter Thomas Fleischmann: the 41-year-old decided to counter the claims with a personal coming out on Tuesday night. “According to the Qatar World Cup ambassador, I have a mental defect,” said Fleischmann provocatively.
Still, he tries to somehow survive the next few minutes without an accident. The German continues: “I hope you will be there. Welcome to Sky Sport News!» Fleischmann received a lot of praise and encouragement on social media for his spontaneous coming out. “Great statement! That’s how it should be!” or “strong Thomas” were two of the many comments.
According to Salman’s statements Roman Heggli, CEO of Pink Cross, told 20 Minutes when asked: “Not even two weeks before the World Cup, the official ambassador of the World Cup campaigned against queer people. It’s absolutely shocking.” Unfortunately, no wonder. It shows how bogus FIFA’s alleged assurances that LGBTIQ people will not be persecuted during the World Cup are false.
