Wil, Champions League and now Qatar: In 2 years, Köhn has blossomed from Challenge League goalkeeper to World Championship driver.
Two years ago, Philipp Köhn was still between the sticks in the Challenge League at FC Wil. He now travels to Qatar with the Swiss national team with Champions League experience. It is only the second national team for the young Swiss.
Many young footballers probably dream about the 24-year-old goalkeeper’s career so far. He himself had not yet realized the rise: “That will probably come later.” He takes it game by game and is happy that the hard work in training is paying off on the field.
The initial spark in Wil
After a season without playing at Red Bull Salzburg, she came on loan to Eastern Switzerland about two years ago. At FC Wil kept six clean sheets in 32 games and established himself as a valuable addition. Even the Austrian series champion, who brought Köhn back to Wilo after just one season, noticed.
I am convinced that we can achieve a lot.
Since then, Köhn has been a regular goalkeeper for the city of Mozart. Thanks in part to 9 shutouts, FC Red Bull Salzburg top the Austrian Bundesliga this season, have kept a clean sheet in all six matches in the Champions League and have proven time and time again to be a safe bet.
The rapid riser now finds his temporary crowning glory with the World Cup squad. “I’m sure we can achieve a lot,” the 24-year-old said before leaving for Qatar. He will try to recommend himself in the national team with attractive performances for the coach and give the team a good feeling. But Köhn will have to wait for his debut in the national costume.
