Preconceptions put to the test: is a car subscription really more expensive?

Renault Captur INITIALE PARIS: automatic, petrol. From 544 francs per month (instead of 574,-). Available from stock.

The decisive factor is the price. This is especially true for large budget items such as owning a car. After all, anyone who buys a car – a new car in Switzerland costs 53,000 francs on average – has to be liquid enough. The majority of newly registered vehicles on Swiss roads are therefore leased. Because the prices seem temptingly cheap. Leasing also has the advantage of being able to switch to a new car or even a new drive technology within a relatively short period of time.

You have also been able to subscribe to your own car for a good four years. Bernese start-up Carvolution pioneered the subscription model and now offers over 70 models from different brands for a fixed monthly price. Customers can choose between periods of 3 to 48 months.

Calculate the total cost correctly

Compared to leasing, a car subscription appears at first glance to be more expensive. Léa Miggiano, co-founder of Carvolution, hears this a lot. He also knows how the high cost of a subscription creates the impression: “Often when you buy or lease a car, you don’t look at the actual total cost. As a result, they are often undervalued and our all-inclusive monthly fixed prices seem expensive.»

With a subscription, the monthly fixed price includes the costs of taxes, insurance, maintenance, service up to tires with tire changes and storage. This is in contrast to the lease rate, which only covers financing. So-called full-service leasing, which also includes everything, is not very common among private individuals in Switzerland. The calculator from Carvolution offers an overview and comparison of total costs.

Subtract the individual expense items

For a direct comparison, Miggiano recommends deducting the cost of insurance, taxes, maintenance, tires and incidentals from the subscription price to see the direct cost of the car. If you do this on the example of the Peugeot 208 Allure Pack valid for 36 months, the car with the Carvolution subscription costs 315 francs per month. The leasing rate determined according to the Comparis leasing calculator varies between 451 and 481 francs depending on the interest rate (see image gallery below).

If you want to compare prices, it is also important to look at the same vehicle model with identical equipment, comparable driving time, mileage and no down payment. This was taken into account in the examples of the VW Tiguan, Peugeot 208 and Opel Mokka.

Anyone who makes a down payment on a lease – also known as the “first big lease interest” – lowers the cost of monthly payments. The bottom line is that the down payment must be spread over the months of the entire lease term and added accordingly to ensure that the costs are true. For example, if the down payment is 5,000 francs, this is an amount of around 140 francs per month, which must be added to the leasing rate. With Carvolution, no deposit is required, only a one-time initial fee of 390 francs is charged to new customers.

After deducting the individual expense items, the effective price for the car is reflected in the subscription. With the Peugeot 208 Allure Pack, the potential for savings is 136 francs per month.

Compare prices with several offers

Calculations are based on indicative operating costs of Touring Club Schweiz (TCS), leasing calculator from Comparis and indicative values from Cembra. In addition, discounts from list prices were calculated. For the calculations in the gallery, the lowest indicative leasing price was always taken, so it is possible that the leasing is higher.

For a detailed price comparison of your own dream car, it is therefore always advisable to obtain one or more leasing offers, as interest rates may differ. You can also order a free no-obligation quote from Carvolution.

The advantage of leasing is that customers can configure their dream car completely according to their needs: they can freely choose the model, engine, equipment, color, interior and other accessories. Leasing usually lasts 24 to 48 months, sometimes up to 60 months. The longer the term, the lower the monthly rate.

With the Carvolution car subscription, the vehicles are already pre-configured, the duration of the subscription can be freely chosen between 3 and 48 months, and the mileage package can be adjusted monthly according to your needs.

Stay flexible

With leasing, there is often an option to buy the car at the end of the contract. The purchase is often pre-agreed and takes place at the market price. Lease installments are not a payment. Depending on the vehicle, Carvolution also offers the option of taking the car back at the end of the subscription period, says Léa Miggiano.

One of the big advantages of subscribing and leasing is that you can simply switch to another car after the contract period has expired and you don’t have to worry about selling or replacing it yourself.

The price will therefore be decisive even when deciding whether to buy a car for subscription or leasing. Flexibility in terms of model and equipment versus flexibility in terms and mileage package with full cost transparency.

The autumn campaign on Carvolution runs until November 21, 2022. This will save you even more money. The promotional price of the Opel Mokka Ultimate is CHF 606 per month (36 months, 850 kilometers per month, paid in the canton of Zurich). The net cost of the car is 408 francs per month, which corresponds to a savings potential of 48 percent compared to leasing.
