Mazda will introduce the new CX-90 at the beginning of 2023. The SUV could celebrate its premiere at the CES fair in Las Vegas.
The first trailer shows a design element behind the front fender that bears the words “Inline 6”. The CX-90 is the first Japanese model to be equipped with the new 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbo as the Skyactive-X compression ignition (SPCCI) combustion engine. It comes with a 48-volt hybrid system.
Mazda CX-90 also with four-cylinder PHEV?
As an additional engine, the large SUV could also have the powertrain from the CX-60 offered in Europe. This combines a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four with an electric motor to provide a system of 327 horsepower.
The model is based on the “Large Architecture” platform. This platform is designed for rear-wheel drive with longitudinally mounted motors and optional I-Active all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is probably standard on the CX-90, after all, this model is Mazda’s top of the range.
Compared to EU crossovers on a small platform, models on a large platform are characterized, among other things, by greater width.
Will the CX-9 remain in the program?
Visually, the new CX-90 is based on Mazda’s current design. Accordingly, the front is manifested by a tall grille and narrow side headlights. The passenger compartment appears settled, the overhangs are short, and the side view features flared wheel arches. At the rear, there are low lights extending far into the tailgate, as well as an apron with a diffuser in a contrasting colour.
It is still a question whether the CX-90 will replace the CX-9 in the model portfolio or whether both models will be offered in parallel. The starting price should be around 40,000 US dollars. The two-row CX-70 follows shortly after its debut. Both SUVs will be launched in the US and selected non-EU countries.

Mazda will introduce the new CX-90 SUV in early 2023. The model with three rows of seats is primarily intended for the American market, and will later be supplemented by the CX-70 with only two rows of seats. Both SUVs stand on the Large platform, which is designed for rear-wheel drive, optionally for all-wheel drive and for longitudinally mounted engines. The CX-90 features a new 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine.
