There was no meeting with American representatives of the Russian Foreign Minister at the ASEAN summit in Cambodia. But Sergey Lavrov accuses the United States of “unacceptable speech” on the topic of Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the US and NATO of seeking dominance in the Asia-Pacific region by militarizing it. “The United States and its allies, as well as NATO, are now trying to swallow this region,” Lavrov said on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit, according to Russian state news agency TASS.

The aim is to militarize the region “with an obvious focus on limiting the interests of China and Russia in the region,” he stressed in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. The summit’s joint final statement failed due to disputes over the wording of the situation in Ukraine, Lavrov said.
“No collective decisions were taken today because the US and its Western allies insisted on completely unacceptable talk regarding the situation in and around Ukraine.”
Lavrov is traveling from the ASEAN meeting to the Group of Major Economic Powers (G20) summit on the Indonesian island of Bali. He represents President Vladimir Putin there, who canceled his participation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on the other hand, wants to speak via video to the meeting in the holiday resort of Nusa Dua. However, at the ASEAN meeting in Cambodia, the ten member countries were unable to agree on Zelensky’s video speech.
