Holger Rune: Casper Ruud defends Danish shooting star Exclusive on Eurosport in Zoff with Stan Wawrinka

“I think he showed that he is very mature. When he played on center court he brought a good energy to the court. He did very well there, it was nice to see,” says the US Open finalist exclusively on Eurosporthe asked of Runes Zoff in Paris-Bercy with Wawrinka.

The three-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland accused the youngster of behaving “like a baby” on the court after the initial defeat in a straight match (6:4, 5:7, 6:7) at the net.
Mama Rune, on the other hand, did not want to let it stand and went on the attack.

“It’s hard to imagine that an athlete like Stan would say something like that. Then he would be a very bad loser,” said Aneke Rune in “TV2”.

Ruud raves about Rune and Alcaraz

Rune himself doesn’t seem to mind any controversy. The Dane recently won the Paris-Bercy Masters, celebrating the biggest success of his career. At the same time, he climbed into the top ten of the ATP world rankings for the first time.

Ruud is also excited about the shooting star development. “He’s only 19 and he’s still young. He and Carlos (Alcaraz; Anm. d. Red.) are the same age. It’s great that two of these guys are now fighting for the biggest titles and winning them. That’s really, really impressive,” enthuses Ruud about the two climbers, adding:

“It’s fun to see the development he and Carlos have made and show the world they’re hungry and ready. So we’ll see more from Holger in the future.”

Ruud: “The level of tennis has improved in all respects”

Rune’s triumph in Paris was not a complete surprise to Nor.

“Obviously it’s a bit of a surprise that he did so well. But I feel like almost anyone can beat anyone, it’s very exciting. The general level of tennis has improved in every way and more players can rise to the challenge of being the best in the world.” That’s why there are these surprising results here and there,” said the 23-year-old.

Ruud himself recently had a verbal altercation with the newly crowned Masters winner.

Ruud plays down the controversy with Rune

After the quarter-final duel at the French Open in June of this year, both players showered each other with accusations and criticism. Finally, Ruud advised his opponent to grow up.

But that is now a thing of the past for the US Open finalist.

“It’s nice to see another Scandinavian doing so well. We clashed a bit in Paris but it’s nothing to get excited about. It’s great to see he’s upped his game and I know I’m keeping an eye on his posture and all that things on the field.” It’s nice that he’s improving every aspect of his game,” concludes Ruud Rune.
