Formula 1: Reasons why Schumacher left Haas – is Mercedes tempting?

Formula 1These are the reasons for Schumacher-Aus at Haas – is Mercedes tempting now?

After a weak season, Mick Schumacher is settled in the Haas racing team. Where the son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher is headed is not clear.

Schumacher crashes in Monaco.

News leaked on Monday: Mick Schumacher’s contract with the Haas racing team will be terminated after a poor season is no longer extended. It was reported by several media – confirmation is still awaited. Instead of the 23-year-old competitor, the second Haas driver will be German Nico Hülkenberg (35) after Denmark’s Kevin Magnussen (30).

But why is Schumacher replaced after only two years? After all, the Formula 1 pilot has recently shown himself to be in better shape and showed his potential more and more often. It also attracts sponsors with its big name.

Hulkenberg is a points supplier

So why? According to Insider magazines, the reason is a lack of security. The Haas racing team wants immediate success and not waiting for the young German to reach his full potential. In short: Boss Günther Steiner (57) wants to have two reliable points suppliers in the team. In addition, Schumacher has often dismantled his Haas this year, as in Monaco (see video above) – this has cost the racing team a huge sum.

The fact is: Hülkenberg is a driver who regularly scores points. He has at least seven points in each of his full F1 seasons, equaling Magnussen’s this season. Schumacher, on the other hand, won the points only twice. In addition, the projected new driver has 181 Grand Prix starts and has always impressed as a replacement driver when a driver has dropped out.

Does he go to Mercedes?

Schumacher himself definitely wants to be in Formula 1 stay. He confirmed that previously Brazilian GP. “It’s hard to forget Formula 1 because I love the sport. And that’s why I won’t do it either,” said the 23-year-old. In Brazil, he summed up his situation like this: “Sometimes it’s your year and sometimes it’s not. I don’t think this is my year.” But he doesn’t want to give up.

But what possibilities does the son of legend Michael Schumacher (53) have? One option is Mercedes. In perspective, he could establish himself as a successor to Lewis Hamilton (37). His contract runs until the end of 2023, but the superstar has announced that he wants to extend it. Meaning: Schumacher would hold the role of reserve driver for a long time.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff (50) told “Motosport-Magazine” after the Brazilian GP: “I make no secret of the fact that the Schumacher family belongs to Mercedes and that we value Mick very much.” So the obligation would be discussed in each case. Then he added: “But the first priority has to be to get a racing cockpit, because he can and he deserves it.”

Alfa-Sauber is also an alternative

But Schumacher has little chance of that. Only the Williams cockpit is still free. However, that is reserved for Logan Sargeant (21), who is expected to replace Nicholas Latifi (27). However, the American has yet to collect points towards a super license in the Formula 2 season finale. Schumacher is considered the top favorite only if he fails to do so.

In addition, Schumacher should probably hope for Audi. The rise of Ingolstadt 2026 with Alfa-Sauber to Formula 1 and have already spoken in favor of the German driver. It may well happen that the 23-year-old will drive for the racing team in Hinwil in 2024 and 2025. At least that’s what various media claim. It is not possible before because Valtteri Bottas (33) and Guanyu Zhou (23) still have valid contracts.
