- The Swiss hockey team defeated the Czech Republic 3:2 after extra time at the end of the Euro Hockey Tour.
- Sven Senteler scored the winning goal in overtime after a big mistake by the Czechs.
- Switzerland thus ends the tournament in Turku in second place behind Sweden.
Two wins, one defeat – with this record, the hockey team from Turku says goodbye. Unlike the previous day against Sweden, the Swiss had luck on their side in overtime against the Czech Republic.
After Jan Koštálek drove the puck behind his own goal, he allowed himself a fundamental bad play. Sven Senteler capitalized on a breakaway to give Switzerland a 3-2 win after 20 seconds in a 3-on-3 game. It was the first goal for the Zug striker in the national team.
Thus, Switzerland finishes in 2nd place at the tournament in Turku. The Swedes are already winners before the final match against Finland.
Jubilant Ambühl with the 49th international goal
Just like the day before against Sweden, the Swiss twice managed to react to the deficit against the Czech Republic. After Jiří Smejkal’s opening goal (10′) – a forgotten wing near the right post – it was Andres Ambühl (11′) who immediately equalized at 1:1. The 39-year-old played his 300th game for the national team and was therefore honored before the match. Ambühl was a little lucky to get to the puck, but even more so he tripped it under the crossbar.
However, the 1:1 did not last long. Damien Riat was sent to the penalty box shortly after the equaliser. Being in the lead, the Czechs did not have to ask twice and immediately advanced again through Ambri center Michael Špaček (13th).
They have survived difficult phases
The renewed Swiss settlement was long overdue. Team Fischer created several chances. The best of them was missed by Ambühl, who after returning from the penalty bench was able to attack the Czech goalkeeper Roman Will by himself. But Nats also had to survive some delicate phases. Ambühl later returned to the cooler. However, the Czechs failed to score again.
Calvin Thürkauf (38), who decisively tipped Mirco Müller’s shot, saw to it that the Swiss side equalized again. In the final third, both teams had chances to win. Another goal was not scored in regular time. After 60 minutes, the score was 2:2 in Switzerland’s third game on the Euro Hockey Tour.
The Finns are celebrating a prestigious victory – the next host is Switzerland
Meanwhile, the Finnish hosts celebrated their first victory on the Euro Hockey Tour. “Suomi” won over Sweden in a prestigious neighbor duel 4:1. The last two Finnish goals in the hard-fought duel came in the closing stages, when the Swedes pulled their goalie off the ice. However, the result does not change the victory in the Swedish group or Finland’s last place.
After the showdown in Turku, the Euro Hockey Tour will stop in Switzerland in December. Between December 15 and 18, Sweden, Finland and the Czech Republic will host each other in Freiburg, where they will once again face each other.
