Banksy’s work was found in the devastated Ukrainian city of Borodyanka. Meanwhile, the street artist confirmed that he was traveling in a war zone.

Banksy has been active again and again even in crisis areas. Now he has apparently left an image in Ukraine as well. There may even be several works by a world-renowned artist in a war-torn country.

Banksy is believed to have been immortalized in Ukraine. The mysterious street artist posted photos on his Instagram feed on Friday night of a work on a destroyed house, said to have been taken in the heavily devastated Kyiv suburb of Borodyanka.

The image shows a girl on the gray wall of a war-torn house, apparently doing a handstand on the rubble. “Borodjanka, Ukraine” reads the accompanying text. The publication on his Instagram channel is traditionally seen as a sign that the British-born Banksy is confirming the work as his own.

Other Banksy works in Ukraine possible

Borodyanka, northwest of the capital Kyiv, was captured by Russian troops on February 24 shortly after the start of the war. In April, Ukrainian troops managed to liberate the settlement. Ukraine accuses Russian troops of committing “mass atrocities” in the suburbs, as well as in Bucha, Hostomela and Irpin. These include murder, kidnapping, torture and rape.

So far, Banksy has only committed to a single painting in Ukraine. However, British media speculate that he may have left other works in the country. For example, in Borodyanka, there is a young boy on the wall who throws a grown man to the ground while playing judo – apparently a reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is an avid judoka.

Banksy’s identity unknown

The famous street artist has also traveled to crisis areas in the past, including the West Bank. He is also dedicated to helping refugees and, among other things, financed a ship for rescue operations in the Mediterranean. Many works are socially critical.

Banksy’s identity and age remain unknown. When the British University of Fine Arts awarded him an honorary professorship, the chair remained empty. The only thing that is fairly certain is that it comes from the western English city of Bristol. His works fetch millions at auction. However, he repeatedly criticizes the traditional art world with museums and galleries.
