German influencer Cathy Hummels started a storm with her post on Instagram.
Influencer Cathy Hummels (34) would probably not like to assume bad intentions. With a post on Instagram, the German wanted to encourage people with depression. In her snap, she looks into the camera with sparkly sunglasses and writes: “When you’re depressed, everything is often black and white. Meanwhile, the color is much nicer. But how do you get color into your gloomy thought carousel? One factor that can help is light. Sun. Let’s shine.” Among them, Hummels names a brand of sunglasses.
Not only did the post spark a storm of outrage among many followers, the German Depression League (DDL) also said: “We are appalled!” the organization announced.
An unfortunate comparison
Most notably, DDL noted that when it came to depression, Hummels made trivial references to sunlight when promoting her company. The organization not only considers this questionable, but, according to an official statement, downright appalling. But that’s not all: “Mrs. Hummels, you seem to be using depression for advertising purposes. Depression is neither trendy nor fashionable. Depression is a serious disease, » continues DDL on Instagram – and at the same time asks the influencer to pay more attention to what she posts on social networks in the future.
Many of Hummels’ followers reacted to the sunglasses photo with similar horror: “Who is so brave as to use this terrible disease as an advertisement? Disrespect to all involved! No sun in the world can shine so brightly that it would help me in the worst phase of my life, » writes one user, for example. Although the influencer may have chosen the wrong words for this post, Hummel has long campaigned to destigmatize depression therapy. She herself suffered from this disease in her youth and wrote a book about her experiences two years ago. (read)
