6 francs for a moving boxAt these collection points, you now have to pay for the disposal of cardboard
Collection points are under pressure due to falling carton prices. At some collection points in central Switzerland, it even costs money if you want to recycle cardboard.
Gas and heating oil prices are rising, a full tank is getting more expensive, food is getting more expensive: inflation is currently making life more expensive for many. And there is a new fee for returning the cardboard – at least at the Josef Frey AG collection points. This is new for central Switzerland. “Currently, the price of cardboard is falling. We get very little or nothing more for it,” explains company boss Patrick Düring. In the last four months, the warehouse has been overcrowded, also due to stagnant online business. The private liquidation company with a total of six collection yards, among others in Sursee, Hochdorf and Eschenbach, is not subsidized like many others. Prices are calculated according to the size, quantity and weight of the returned box. A shoe box full of cardboard costs two francs, a moving box must be six francs.
Strong fluctuations in the global market
Will paid cardboard disposal become standard? Düring assured: “No, industry is in a state of constant change. In three months, the situation can be completely different again.” The collection center of the Beck company is located in Sursee, less than two kilometers away. As CEO Franz Spörri confirmed to 20 Minuten, the disposal of cardboard for private households will remain free.
In Real, a municipal association in Lucerne with a total of eleven Ökihöfe, the amount of cartons varies from year to year. A significant increase has been observed since the start of the coronavirus crisis and is apparently due to the increase in online shipping. “Until further notice, however, at Real Madrid there is no paid disposal of cardboard from households,” communications manager Fabian Zumbühl writes when asked. Cardboard recycling revenues depend on the global market and are currently subject to large fluctuations. Real can absorb these fluctuations and see no need to act at the moment.
“Our customers still have to get used to paid returns. But the majority understands,” says Düring. However, there are always people who fundamentally do not understand this. However, they expected such reactions.
