Arrival in Doha. Bizarre reception of the Swiss national team.

The Swiss national team’s World Cup adventure has begun. After landing in Doha on Monday evening, Murat Yakin’s team is already expected in the Qatari capital.

On Monday shortly after 15:00, the Swiss national team will start their World Cup adventure by departing from Zurich. Around six hours and a smooth flight later, Murat Yakin’s team landed in Qatar shortly before 11pm local time. He heads straight for the luxurious Royal Méridien Hotel, where the stars of Nati move into their rooms.

The national team is already expected in the Qatari capital. Fans with Swiss jerseys and flags give Sommer et al. a warm, if somewhat bizarre, welcome. “A nice welcome to Doha,” says the national team on Twitter about the welcome, which is accompanied by music.

There is less enthusiasm for the waiting fans in the comments. “Nice welcome? Is this a joke?” asks a user, believing the so-called fans are paid. Another agrees: “I hope they get paid well.”

Not only Swiss colors are clearly represented in Qatar. Argentinian, Brazilian, Spanish or Portuguese supporters also appear to be in large numbers less than a week before the tournament kicks off – although one Twitter user suspects: “I think the Qataris just put on the kits from other countries.”
