Ahead of the G20 summit in Bali: Joe Biden meets Xi Jinping

First meeting since the US presidential election two years ago: Xi Jinping and Joe Biden greet each other in Bali.

At a time of serious political tension between the US and China, Presidents Joe Biden (79) and Xi Jinping (69) met for the first time for top-level talks. The two heads of state met on Monday ahead of the G20 summit of the most important industrialized and developing countries on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali. They have called each other several times since Biden’s election victory two years ago, but have not seen each other in person. Both greeted each other with a handshake.

At the start of the meeting, which was expected to last several hours, Xi Jinping said the relationship “faces many challenges”. “As leaders of two great countries, we must plan the right path (…) as we move forward.”
