The Mastodon social network enjoys over 70,000 new users every day.
Recently, another platform has been driving the world of social networks. The network, which has been around since 2016, is called Mastodon and has been booming as an alternative platform since Elon Musk, 51, took over Twitter.
What is Mastodon?
Mastodon is part of Fedivers, a decentralized social network. In principle, it works exactly the same as Twitter and other social media. Users create an account on the server and can then post images, videos and texts. In the application, the posts of the people you follow are listed below, just like on Instagram. You can like, share and comment on posts. Like other social networks, Mastodon is free.
So how does Mastodon differ from Twitter?
The big difference is that the platform does not use only one server like other social media. Mastodon is based on open software, which means that the source code is publicly available. The network is organized decentralized. So it has different servers around the world and these are private. Mastadon also gives the user 500 characters per message. There are only 280 of them on Twitter. Unlike its famous brother, messages are not sorted by algorithm.
Who is behind Mastodon?
The founder’s name is Eugen Rochko (29). A young German with Russian roots launched the platform in 2016. His goal was to create a decentralized platform that no one person or company could control.
How many users does Mastodon have?
Approximately one million users are active on Mastodon each month. In total, over 6 million people are registered. Since Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, which has left many disaffected, the network has been growing by around 70,000 new users every day. Compared to Twitter’s 238 million users, Mastodon is still a niche.
How to join Mastodon?
As with other social networks, you simply create a profile. Enter your username and email address and select the desired server. Which server you choose is crucial because servers can be opened and closed by operators as they wish. This probability is lower for larger servers with more members. Server operators can also set their own usage rules. It is also wise to choose a Swiss server so that the data is secured according to the Swiss data protection law.
What are the benefits of Mastodon?
The advantage is that not all data is stored on a central server, as is the case with Facebook or Twitter. This makes the network more independent and cannot be controlled by just one institution.
It’s a double-edged sword when it comes to data protection. On the one hand, it is positive that no company has access to all data and its processing. On the other hand, the security of your own data depends on the server you choose. Depending on the server and carrier, this can be good or bad.
What are the disadvantages of Mastodon?
The system of many independent servers also has disadvantages. Along with the publicly available source code, almost anyone can open their own server and join the platform. For example, the right-wing extremist group “Gab” opened a server on Mastodon after being banned from other social media, NZZ writes.
In addition, complete exclusion, such as Donald Trump (76) by Twitter after the attack on the US Capitol in January 2021, is impossible. Trump could simply open his own server and rejoin the network.
