- Basel concede their first defeat in Letzigrund since 2014 or 17 games against GC.
- Renat Dadashov scored the winner as the Grasshoppers went 1-0 up, while the unimaginative Basel side only had one really big chance despite being outshot 21-1 (!) in corners.
- In the second match of the 16th round of the Super League, St. Gallen near Sion a real shooting festival.
It is a widespread rule on pitches and among recreational footballers that corners are not played. For this purpose, every 3rd or 5th true corner is converted into a penalty. If this passage were also in the rules of the Superliga, Basel would probably have recorded a commanding victory in Letzigrund on Saturday night. Because in the 83rd minute, Liam Millar scored Basel’s 18th corner (compared to the only one (!) on GC). But the score indicator was still 1-0 in favor of Grasshoppers.
FC Basel have not lost against GC away from home since 2014. No wonder coach Alex Frei’s side threw everything forward in the final stages in Letzigrund. Then, at the 19th (!) corner kick, it was finally dangerous: Bad luck was added to the previous incompetence. Noah Katterbach headed the ball against the crossbar (87′), Bradley Fink then missed the goal from close range. Shortly after, it became clear: GC were celebrating their first home win over FC Basel in over 8 years – ending the bear market with just one win from 7 games.
Dadasov is celebrating after a long wait
In Letzigrund, it took almost half an hour before Renat Dadašov found the first chance to score. If he was still heading wide of the goal, he followed up another opportunity with a better-adjusted aim: After Andy Pelmard’s disastrous misplay in the break-in, the ball fell round to Dadašov. He easily scored his 4th goal of the season (34th). It was, to say the least, the only highlight of a dismal first half.
22 minutes, 7 corners, 0 percent goal risk
FC Basel, running out of ideas, trained mainly on corner training: the guests were allowed to take 7 corners themselves in the first 22 minutes, none of which created a real danger and were not even countable. It should stay that way until the end.
If the club’s management remains loyal to coach Frei, he will have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks to add to his points tally in 2023. The lead over leader YB threatens to increase to 14 points on Sunday. Just 21 goals scored in 16 league games, none against the weakest defense in Super League. These are not the numbers one would expect from a team with an extremely talented squad on the knee of the Rhine.

This is how it goes
Teams now get a generous World Cup break – at least those players who aren’t traveling to Qatar. It continues at the end of January in the Super League. GC welcomes leaders YB on 21st, Basel travels to St. Gallen the next day.
